I caught up with ‘Rebel’ aka Congo Natty at Unit 137. When I asked him about Stevie Hyper D he told me about the first time he remembered meeting him, back in the day. “This was before Jungle, at a West End club in Wardour Street, called ‘The Wag’.” Rebel recalled there being loads of vocalists in the session. “There were nuff man on the mic and no one was really passing Stevie the mic.” Rebel remembers Stevie having a particular good energy about him and after a while Rebel passed Stevie the mic. From there on these two integral characters of the Jungle scene would hail each other when seeing one another in raves and parties. Rebel also told me that he regards Stevie Hyper D as “a ground breaking MC, that was ahead of his time” and considered the height of his work, from when he was playing sets alongside Nicky Black Market. Check this set above from the two at Helter Skelter Energy 1997.
